Stourhead Bat Box

No plastic  Screwed Construction  From a sustainable source  FSC certified wood

This Stourhead bat box is part of the National Trust Range. It features a single roosting chamber made of FSC certified timber & an ingenious rough sawn landing platform and climbing ladder for the bats. The open design reduces the need to clean and allows for easy inspection.

The bat box should be sited 3 – 5 metres high up on a tree post or building. The best spot is on an existing flight path of bats so they can take rest and shelter. Ideally facing north, south-east or south-west.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance. Look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation. Or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
